Nungwi beach is famous for its long white sandy beach, perfect for snorkeling and other water sport activities. Enjoy sunsets from Mnarani Beach Cottages over the warm Indian Ocean with Dhows sailing boats passing by.
The 56 ft by 28 ft swimming pool is an all-time favourite with guests. Laze on the sun beds, cool down on a tropical sunny day. Relax in the pool and let go of any tension by using the gentle massage jets found in the pool’s shallow end.

Explore the area
Depending on the moon and the daily tides, you can access the beach in front of the hotel from the Mnarani deck area. Take a leisurely stroll to the Nungwi Dhow shipbuilding yard, beach-comb or join the local women and children as they search the shallows of the reef for small fish and octopus.
Remember to bring your beach shoes with you.
Snorkeling
The Nungwi peninsula boasts magnificent diving and snorkeling sites, most notably the famed Mnemba Atoll. A full day trip on Mnarani’s own traditional dhow, ‘My Lady’, will take you there for an extensive forage into the tropical underwater world, swimming and sunbathing on a remote and picturesque beach. You can choose from two favorite snorkeling spots – one in shallow and one in deeper water.
Swim with the dolphins (although their presence can’t be guaranteed) or go for a spot of fishing and catch your own lunch. Don’t worry if you don’t catch a bite – we’ll buy from the local fishermen and set up a beach barbecue just for you!
Sunset Cruise
Sailing on a traditional Swahili dhow is a great experience in itself. Add the sunset, the gentle breeze, and the peace and calm out there in our azure waters… and it turns into an unforgettable holiday memory!
Kayaking
Paddling along the coastline in a kayak is a relaxing and fun way to explore your surroundings. There are double and single kayaks available; life jackets and shoes can be provided.
Game Fishing
The waters around the North of Zanzibar are teeming with marine life. If you feel like catching your own dinner, Mnarani offers both full (8h) and half-day (4h) deep sea fishing trips. The boat carries a maximum of five passengers plus crew. It is fully equipped with two outboard engines, GPS, radio, fish finder, life jackets and first aid kit. Fish caught by guests include; King Fish, Sail Fish, Blue Marlin and Yellow Fin Tuna.
PADI Scuba Diving
There are no diving facilities at Mnarani itself, but Mnrani work closely with a reputable certified dive center in the vicinity. They are more than happy to assist you with booking your dives or PADI courses.
Sailing
If you are an experienced Hobie cat 16 captain, you are welcome to hire Mnarani’s boat. If it’s your first time, one of the experienced staff can take you sailing to enjoy the breeze along the coast. Please note the sailing will depend on the sea condition.
Kite Surfing
From December to March you can enjoy the thrill of kite surfing in front of the hotel.
A small lunch menu is available with local dishes as well as pizzas and sandwiches.
The wholesome evening meal alternates between a fixed menu with a choice of dishes or a buffet which includes starters, salads as well as homemade Swahili dishes, international and vegetarian options. Don’t forget to try the resident Pastry Chef’s desserts.
You may also have the privilege of being introduced to Mnarani’s resident bush babies who love to eat at their own tree table in front of the restaurant most evenings.
On Sundays, Mnarani invites it’s guests to a BBQ at the side of the pool or on the beach depending on the tides. It is the highlight of the week and not to be missed as it brings everyone together.
If you require a special diet, have a yearning to taste other recipes, want to organize a special celebration, just let the Head Chef know. He and his team will do their best to accommodate you.
The bar and lounge area are set at one end of Mnaranis wooden deck overlooking the Indian Ocean. Relax and while away your time, sipping your choice of drink from our fine selection of wines, cocktails, and freshly prepared fruit juices, whilst listening to calming music and watching the waves.
For those guests who would like to take their own special bottle of wine to the bar, restaurant or public areas, we charge a $5 corkage fee.
The bar area includes a pool table, darts and satellite TV for your enjoyment. Try your hand at Bao, the traditional Zanzibari board game – the staff will be happy to show you how it’s done!

The twelve rustic cottages, arranged in pairs, are small yet homely and cozy. All are furnished with four post beds handmade in Zanzibar from locally sourced palm wood.

Zanzibar house – Deluxe rooms
The ten rooms in Zanzibar House are all named after the islands and islets of the Zanzibar archipelago. They offer accommodation with extra space (25 square meters). Each of the ten rooms has air conditioning, fans, en-suite bathrooms, fridge and a tea/coffee station for your convenience. The rooms all open onto a large wooden verandah or balcony where you can enjoy the sunrise in the morning, relaxation in the afternoon, and starry skies at night. There is also wireless internet access.
For those wanting to share their holiday experience with family or friends, the ground floor rooms (Pemba, Unguja, Mnemba and Misali) offer the option of adjoining rooms, as well as direct access to the sun deck and the beach.
The first floor rooms (Tumbatu, Kojani, Bawe and Chumbe) boast the same individual facilities and space, with balconies looking directly out over the Indian Ocean.
If you still want something more, climb up to our roof top terrace to take in the spectacular 360-degree view over the whole Northern part of the island, a million sparkling stars at night and surreal sunrises and sunsets.

Superior rooms
Mnarani’s four ‘Superior Rooms’ are perfect for guests who like some extra space and comfort, and are ideal for families with smaller children. Each room has an open plan ground floor with a sitting area (where an extra bed can be added), bathroom and kitchenette with fridge and coffee/tea making facilities. On the first floor mezzanine, you will find the sleeping area with a large double bed.
The cottages are decorated in local style, using furniture designed from re-fashioned ngalawas and dhows (the traditional sailing boats on the Swahili Coast).
The spacious balconies on both floors offer you unimpeded views of spectacular sunrises over the Indian Ocean.

Fishermans house – Apartments
Fisherman House was built with the idea of creating comfortable accommodation for guests who travel as a big family or in a group. It is set in Mnarani’s tropical garden, only 50 meters from the beach.
There are two apartments, one with two bedrooms and another with three bedrooms. Each room has its private bathroom en-suite, as well as air conditioning, fan and safe deposit box. At 16 square meters, they are all big enough to add an extra bed if required. Each apartment also has a big lounge/dining area with kitchenette, fridge, and a spacious verandah.
The furniture is made of coconut wood traditionally grown in Zanzibar. The two apartments have connecting doors for larger families/groups who want to share the space.
On the top of the house, there is an open space where you can sunbathe, have a barbecue, celebrate a special birthday or anniversary. With stunning ocean views, it is perfect to watch the sunset on the horizon.

Mahaba Cottage- Honeymoon Suite
‘Mahaba’ means ‘romance’ in Swahili, and this cottage is definitely romantic. Fall asleep and wake up to the sounds and sights of the Indian Ocean right on your doorstep!
The honeymoon cottage is tucked away at the quiet edge of the property. It is decorated in local style with wooden floors and walls lined with traditional woven palm fronds. The design in open-plan, with a lounge/dining area, kitchenette, and bathroom on the ground floor, as well as an airy sleeping area with a comfortable double bed upstairs.
